End of Day One

Hue Hooper is a small game I am making for the 2021 Kenney Jam. It started today and the theme is Rotation. It is also my first game, so it is very exciting.

My original plan was for my game to be an endless runner type, but the player would be falling downward through different color rings. After a small prototype I trashed that idea because it felt boring.

Then I remembered one of the micro games from WarioWare Inc...

The point of it was to move left/right to stomp the goomba while Wario was constantly jumping.

At first I wanted the player to have to do a full rotation before landing to earn points, but I figured after a while they could get into a rhythm and there would be zero challenge. Next I had it to where the player had to either land on their head or foot depending on the on-screen instructions. I was almost going to end on that idea, but I tested the idea of adding 'left side' and 'right side' to the mix. I soon realized with the sprite I was using, it wouldn't be entirely easy to differentiate left and right.

So that is how I ended up on using colors.

I think for my first game and first game jam entry, I am doing pretty well. Definitely learning a lot. As of now the game is in a playable state. Throughout the day I came up with so many things I wanted to add to the game, like a shop and different level layouts, but I don't think I will have enough time to add them all before tomorrow night. Tomorrow I need to focus on a title screen and some sort of game over screen.
